I don’t recall much about my great-grandfather, Ralph, but after seeing an advertisement of his from 1916 I’d like to think we’ve gone about our professional lives in a similar fashion.
Auctioneers and real estate agents sell more than property, they have to sell themselves to be successful. I always thought my father and grandfather were fairly good at that, and it’s easy to see where they got that from – Ralph.
It’s not all promotion, though. Actions speak louder than words, and over time one’s actions become a reputation. The proof’s in the pudding, like they say.
I do recall my grandfather telling me that Ralph was always called the best dressed man in Tipton, Iowa, all of us Wingerts’ hometown. I probably don’t uphold that family tradition, but I do relate to Ralph’s words of “efficient service and honest effort” in his advertisement.
